The Webinar: Fire Safety – How to Protect Our European Cultural Heritage?, held on November 18th 2024 during European Fire Safety Week 2024, brought together experts and stakeholders to address the critical issue of fire safety in cultural heritage sites. With growing risks highlighted by incidents like the Notre-Dame Cathedral and Copenhagen Stock Exchange fires, the event emphasized the importance of protecting irreplaceable treasures such as museums, historical buildings, and monuments. Key presentations included an opening statement by Jakob Vedsted Anderson, Copenhagen Fire Chief; a session on the “Basic Principles of Fire Safety of Historical Buildings” by Dr. Aleš Jug, Chairman of the Slovenian Fire Protection Association; and insights on the role of fire safety engineering by Ralf Bruyninckx, President of SFPE Benelux Chapter. The discussions focused on identifying fire risks, sharing best practices, and fostering collaboration through policy and innovation, leaving attendees inspired to strengthen fire safety measures across Europe. Dr. Aleš Jug, Chairman of the Slovenian Fire Protection Association, presented the CFPA Guideline 30: Basic Principles of Fire Safety of Historical Buildings during the event. His presentation focused on the key principles and strategies outlined in the guideline, which aim to mitigate fire risks in historical buildings while preserving their cultural and architectural value. Dr. Jug emphasized the importance of tailored fire safety measures that respect the unique vulnerabilities of heritage structures, offering actionable recommendations to enhance protection while maintaining historical integrity.
