The wildfire, which ignited near Hawk Meadow Trail in northwest Reno on Saturday 22 August, spread rapidly due to strong winds, low humidity, and the very dry vegetation at this time of year. Authorities have confirmed that the fire was human-caused, although the exact circumstances of its ignition remain under investigation.
At its peak, the fire burned more than 15,000 acres and forced large-scale evacuations across Washoe County. Initial reports indicated that 42,000 residents were under mandatory evacuation orders, while another 45,000 were warned they could soon be required to leave their homes.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as the incident escalated. In a statement during the blaze, he said: “This is an active and rapidly evolving situation, and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials.”
Residential areas were among the hardest hit. As reported by Forbes, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve warned that “structures have already been burned in this fire” as the blaze advanced toward populated neighbourhoods. Subsequent assessments found that dozens of homes had been destroyed and several others damaged.
