For many years, Tim Renders has been listing all the cases of domestic fires reported in the Belgian press. He has drawn up a detailed analysis of victimology, which is a useful complement to the statistics of the Civil Security (Ministry of the Interior) – which are too incomplete concerning the causes and location of domestic fires.
In 2022, domestic fires in Belgium caused the death of at least 76 people in 67 fires. Most of these persons were men (45) – the average age of the victims was 64.
The analysis of the figures from 2014 to 2022 reveals that in Belgium one person dies as a result of domestic fire every 6 days compared to every 12 days in the Netherlands.
This leads the author to question the causes of the poor results in Belgium, even though all regions now require smoke detectors in houses.
He concludes that there is a lack of detailed statistics to better target prevention campaigns and that regional regulations differ.
