Five taken to hospital following takeaway fire

Around 100 firefighters were called to a fire at a takeaway restaurant with flats above in Holloway, Islington, on 28 November 2024.

Control officers at the London Fire Brigade (LFB) received 19 calls regarding the fire at around 3.45am. Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire appliances were mobilised to the scene, with crews from Holloway, Kentish Town, Islington, Euston, and surrounding fire stations assisting in the firefighting efforts.

In an update on X (formerly Twitter), LFB stated: “Firefighters are working hard to bring a fire at a takeaway restaurant with flats above in Holloway under control.

The whole of the ground floor is alight.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) later confirmed that five people needed to be taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, with a spokesperson explaining: “We were called at 3.51am today to reports of a fire on Seven Sisters Road. We sent a number of resources to the scene including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer, an advanced paramedic, and members of our Hazardous Area Response Team.”

As reported by the Independent, Station Commander Mike Watts said that the fire had produced “a lot of smoke in the vicinity”. As such, residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed. At around 8am, LFB confirmed that the fire had been brought under control and crews were in the process of damping it down.

LFB said that the ground-floor restaurant had been destroyed by fire and a flat roof had collapsed. Additionally, two flats on the first and second floors of the building sustained partial damage.

The brigade and the Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

As reported by BBC News, two men arrested on “suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life” have since been released on bail.
